The prevention of malnutrition

Vitamins and minerals are essential for a high-quality diet and a lack of these vital nutrients can have a profound impact on a person’s brain, bones, and body. Malnutrition can also lead to stunted growth in children, cognitive delays, and a weakened immune system.

Did you know?

Pakistan is in the midst of a malnutrition crisis! 58% of households in Pakistan are food-insecure, with just under 10% living in hunger.

How we aim to help:

  • BREASTFEEDING – To curb malnutrition, one of our projects is to teach caregivers the importance of a balanced diet. We start by informing individuals, especially mothers, that the most crucial time for good nutrition is in the 1,000-day period; from the start of a woman’s pregnancy until a child’s second birthday. In this regard, breastmilk is scientifically proven to be a critical food for a baby’s health and development. It provides vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antibodies to help a child thrive in their first 6 months of life and thereafter. We aim to teach expectant mothers the importance of breastfeeding by providing counseling and establishing safe spaces for infant feeding.

  • SUPPLEMENTATION AND MASS FORTIFICATION – The Edge Foundation will be providing specific nutrients that are not a part of expectant mother’s regular diet, such as Iron and Folic Acid. These added supplements will reduce the risk of low birth weight, maternal anaemia, and iron deficiencies. We are hoping to continuously provide mass fortification in the form of staple foods such as flour, sugar, salt and cooking oils.
